What Week Should You Actually Book a 3D/4D Ultrasound? A Wichita Sonographer Explains

Mom cherishes 3D ultrasound with baby’s first tiny shoes.

If there's one question I get more than any other at Breathtaking Moments, it's this: "When should I come in?"

And it's a great question, because timing is one of the most important factors in getting those stunning, clear images you've been seeing in our gallery — the ones where you can count your baby's fingers or see a little yawn in motion. Get the timing wrong, and even the best equipment in the world can only do so much.

So here's what I tell every family who reaches out: the sweet spot for most 3D and 4D sessions is between 26 and 32 weeks — and within that window, weeks 28 through 30 tend to produce the most detailed, beautiful images. Let me explain why, and what to expect if you're booking earlier or later than that range.

Why the Window Matters: What's Happening Inside

At 20 weeks, your baby is still relatively lean — the facial fat that creates those round, soft cheeks hasn't filled in yet. On a 3D image, this can make features look more angular and bony than you'd expect. The images are still meaningful, and some families love seeing the baby at this stage, but they're not going to have the same depth and detail as images taken later.

By 26 weeks, things start to change. Baby has put on enough subcutaneous fat that the face begins to look rounder and more defined. The amniotic fluid — which acts almost like a window that the ultrasound waves pass through — is still at a comfortable level, giving us plenty of room to navigate and capture different angles.

The 28 to 30 week window is where everything comes together. You've got full cheeks, defined features, plenty of fluid for clear imaging, and the baby still has enough room to move around and give us good position options. This is when we get the images that make moms cry in the best way.

After 32 weeks, things get trickier. Baby is bigger now, and space is getting tight. That's not a problem for the pregnancy — it's perfectly normal — but it does mean the baby is more likely to be pressed up against the uterine wall, or to have a hand or foot blocking the face. We can still get beautiful images after 32 weeks, but there's a higher chance we'll need to coax the baby into a better position, and occasionally we schedule a rescan. (For the record, we always offer a 30-minute free rescan if the baby doesn't cooperate — that's just part of how we operate.)

What About Gender Reveals?

Gender determination is a different conversation, because you're looking for something specific rather than overall image quality. For gender reveals, we typically recommend coming in between 15 and 20 weeks, when the anatomy is visible, and the baby has room to move into a clear position. Earlier than 15 weeks, and the structures are too small to see reliably. Later than 20 weeks still works for gender, but most parents are eager to know before the anatomy scan if possible.

If you're doing our Full Term Package — which includes three sessions across all three trimesters — your gender peek happens naturally in the second trimester visit, so you don't have to figure out the timing yourself. We schedule it for the right week.

What If My Due Date Makes the Ideal Window Hard to Hit?

Life doesn't always cooperate with the perfect imaging window, and that's okay. If you have a baby shower at 25 weeks and really want to reveal new images there, we can work with that. If you're traveling for the holidays and 33 weeks is the only time you can get in, we'll do everything we can to get you beautiful images. I've been doing ultrasound for over 10 years — I know how to work with the baby's position and maximize what we can capture at any stage.

That said, if you have flexibility, the 28–30 week range is worth protecting on your calendar. It's the window I'd book if it were my own pregnancy, and I want families in Wichita and across southern Kansas to get the most from their session.

One More Thing: Hydration

Timing gets all the attention, but hydration matters almost as much. Amniotic fluid levels are directly influenced by how much water you're drinking in the days before your appointment. A well-hydrated mama gives us a clearer "window" to image through. The advice I give every family: start drinking more water at least five to seven days before your session — not just the morning of. Eight to ten glasses a day in that lead-up window makes a real difference in image quality.
