What Are the Benefits of Choosing a Private Ultrasound Over a Traditional Clinic Visit?

If you've had a standard OB ultrasound, you know the drill. You lie on a paper-covered table, a technician runs a probe across your belly, takes measurements, and within about 10 minutes, you're handed a blurry black-and-white printout on your way out the door. The appointment was necessary. It was probably fine. But it didn't feel like a moment.

That's not a criticism of your doctor's office; medical ultrasounds serve a completely different purpose. But if you've ever walked out of one of those appointments wishing you could have slowed down, brought your mom along, or just actually seen your baby in a meaningful way, there's a reason why more and more families across Wichita, Derby, Andover, and Maize are booking private elective ultrasound sessions.

Here's what the difference actually looks like, and why so many families say the private studio experience was one of the most memorable parts of their entire pregnancy.

What's the actual difference between a medical ultrasound at my OB and an elective ultrasound at a private studio?

The purpose, the technology, the time, and the atmosphere are all completely different.

Your OB's ultrasound appointments are diagnostic. The sonographer is measuring nuchal translucency, checking placental placement, confirming the anatomy, and tracking growth percentiles. That's important medical work, and it should stay exactly where it is, in a clinical setting.

An elective session at a private studio like Breathtaking Moments in Wichita is built for something else entirely: bonding, keepsakes, and connection. There's no checklist of measurements to get through. The sonographer isn't rushing to document findings for your chart. The entire session is focused on finding your baby's face, capturing their movements, and making sure you and whoever you brought with you can actually experience this.

The technology is different too. Most OB offices use standard 2D imaging, the flat, grainy black-and-white images that are great for diagnostic purposes but don't exactly look like a baby. A private elective studio uses 3D, 4D, and HD Live (5D) imaging. You see surface detail. You see facial features. You watch your baby move in real time. Many families describe it as the first moment pregnancy stopped feeling abstract and started feeling real.

Is it actually safe to get an ultrasound outside of a medical office?

Yes, especially when the session is run by a registered sonographer with clinical experience.

This is the question worth asking before you book anywhere, and the answer depends entirely on who is doing your scan.

At Breathtaking Moments, owner Abby is a registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) with over 10 years of clinical ultrasound experience. That's the same credential held by sonographers in hospital imaging departments. It means she completed formal training, supervised clinical hours, and passed a national certification exam. It's not a weekend course or an online certification; it's the same standard of training used in medical settings.

That matters for two reasons. First, it means the equipment is being used correctly and safely, with appropriate exposure times. Second, it means that if Abby notices something unexpected during a session, she has the professional knowledge to recognize it and direct you back to your OB.

Elective ultrasound sessions are considered safe when conducted responsibly by trained professionals. The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) does caution against keepsake ultrasounds performed by unqualified operators, which is exactly why choosing a credentialed studio makes all the difference. Not all private studios are created equal. Credentials matter.

Can I really bring my whole family to a private ultrasound session?

That's genuinely one of the biggest reasons families choose a private studio.

At a standard OB appointment, space is limited, and the clinical environment makes it feel awkward to bring a crowd. Your partner might squeeze in, but there's no room for grandparents, siblings, or friends, and the whole thing is over so fast it wouldn't matter anyway.

A private studio session is designed to be shared.

One mom from Derby who booked the Deluxe Experience with us put it this way: she and her husband had already seen the standard OB ultrasound image from their 20-week anatomy scan. It looked like what it looked like. But when her mother-in-law saw the baby's face on screen during their 3D session at 28 weeks, clearly, in detail, watching the baby yawn, she cried. Her husband cried. That's not something that happens in a 10-minute diagnostic appointment.

At Breathtaking Moments, the studio is set up so everyone can see the screen together. We regularly have grandparents, toddler siblings, and friends all in the room. The session is long enough to let people settle in and actually experience it rather than just catching a glimpse.

What kind of images and keepsakes do I actually get to take home?

Real keepsakes, not a single blurry printout.

This is one of the most concrete differences between an elective studio and a medical appointment.

From your OB, you'll typically leave with one or two black-and-white thermal prints from the 2D scan. They're meaningful, but they're not exactly wall-worthy.

From a session at Breathtaking Moments, depending on the package you choose, you leave with a USB drive containing all of your images, a DVD of the recorded session, multiple printed color photos of the 3D/4D images, and, with our most popular packages, a heartbeat stuffed animal that plays your baby's actual recorded heartbeat.

That last one especially tends to get people. A plush animal with your baby's heartbeat inside it, recorded during the session, given to a sibling before the baby comes home, or kept on a shelf next to the crib, families from Wichita to El Dorado to Hutchinson have told us it became one of their most treasured items from the whole pregnancy.

My OB already does ultrasounds as part of my prenatal care. Why would I pay for something extra?

Because your OB's ultrasounds and an elective session serve completely different purposes, and one doesn't replace the other.

Here's a scenario a lot of our clients describe: they've had their 20-week anatomy scan, everything looked good, and now they're just... waiting. The next appointment is weeks away. They're in the second trimester, and they haven't really seen the baby since that one scan. The pregnancy is real, but it feels kind of distant.

An elective ultrasound fills that gap, not medically, but emotionally. Seeing your baby at 28 weeks in full 3D detail, watching them move, getting a clear image of their face, sharing it with people you love, it changes how the rest of the pregnancy feels.

A mom from Andover who booked our Standard Package during her second pregnancy told us she wished she'd known about private studios with her first. With her first, she had her two OB ultrasounds; they were over in minutes, and that was it. With her second, she booked a 28-week session, brought her three-year-old daughter to "meet the baby," and watched her daughter point at the screen and say "that's my baby sister." That's not something a clinical appointment is designed to create.

The two experiences aren't competing. Your OB's care is essential. An elective session is a bonus a way to connect with your baby in a different, unhurried, family-centered way.

What's the ideal time to book a private elective ultrasound?

Between 26 and 32 weeks for the best 3D/4D images, though we offer sessions at multiple stages.

Timing matters more than most first-time parents realize, and it's something we talk through with every family who reaches out before booking.

The sweet spot for 3D and 4D imaging is 26 to 32 weeks. By this point, your baby has developed enough facial fat that their features look round and soft rather than skeletal. There's still enough amniotic fluid around them to allow clear imaging. And they're not yet so big and cramped that getting a face shot becomes difficult.

Before 26 weeks, images often look thinner and less detailed. After 34 weeks, positioning gets trickier, the baby is running out of room, and a hand in front of the face is harder to work around.

If you're hoping to get a gender determination, that's typically done between 15 and 20 weeks. Our Full Term Package ($325) actually covers all three trimesters, a heart rate check in the first trimester, gender determination in the second, and the full Deluxe Experience in the third. For families who want to document the whole journey, it's the best value we offer.

Same-week appointments are usually available. Families from Bel Aire, Maize, Newton, and as far out as Hutchinson and Pratt regularly make the drive because there aren't many credentialed elective studios in southern Kansas with our level of experience and technology.

What if the baby isn't cooperating during the session?

We've got a policy for that because it happens, and it shouldn't cost you a second visit.

Baby cooperation is one of those things that sounds obvious in hindsight but surprises a lot of first-time parents. Sometimes, babies have their hands covering their faces. Sometimes they're facing the wrong direction. Sometimes they've just picked that particular 30-minute window to sleep deeply and not move.

An experienced sonographer knows techniques for gently encouraging movement, repositioning, walking around, drinking a cold drink, but the reality is that sometimes the baby just isn't going to give you a face shot on that particular day.

That's why Breathtaking Moments offers a 30-minute free rescan if the baby doesn't show their face during your session. You don't pay again. You reschedule, and we try again. It's the kind of policy that only makes sense for a studio that's confident in its process and cares more about your experience than squeezing in another billable appointment.

Not every private studio offers this. It's worth asking before you book anywhere.

How do I choose the right package for where I am in my pregnancy?

Here's a straightforward breakdown based on your situation.

If you're in the first trimester and want early reassurance, the first visit in our Full Term Package includes a wellness and heart rate check. For many families dealing with the anxiety of early pregnancy, hearing a strong heartbeat before 12 weeks brings a level of calm that's hard to put a price on.

If you want gender determination, our Gender Sneak Peek session is available between 15–20 weeks. Fast, affordable, and a lot more fun than waiting for the anatomy scan.

If you're 25–35 weeks and want the full experience, the Deluxe Experience ($200) is our most popular individual session. Thirty-five minutes, 3D/4D/5D HD Live imaging, USB drive of all images, DVD of the session, printed color photos, and a heartbeat animal. For most families, this is the session.

If you want to document the whole pregnancy, the Full Term Package ($325) covers all three trimesters, three appointments for less than the price of two individual sessions combined.

Every package is explained in detail on our pricing page, and we're always happy to talk through which option makes the most sense for where you are in your pregnancy. Call or text us at (316) 247-6751.

Why Wichita Families Keep Choosing Breathtaking Moments

There are a few things that we think set Breathtaking Moments apart from other options in the region, and they're not things we'd expect you to just take our word for.

Abby has been doing this for over a decade. She was trained clinically, not just in an elective studio, which means she understands fetal anatomy and imaging at a level that goes beyond producing pretty pictures. She has been featured on Good Day Kansas discussing what makes the elective ultrasound experience meaningful and safe. Families who come in nervous, with first pregnancies, complicated histories, and anxiety about whether everything looks okay, consistently mention how much her calm, experienced demeanor made the difference.

Our Google reviews reflect that. Heather, one of our recent clients, noted it was "well worth the price" and that she'd highly recommend us to anyone who wants a sneak peek of their baby. Amanda described the environment as comfortable, with plenty of room for family, and said she'd recommend us without hesitation. Kara called Abby "absolutely amazing"fast, kind, and patient.

We're located at 8343 E. 32nd St., Suite 130, in Wichita, and we serve families from across the region, Andover, Derby, Maize, Bel Aire, El Dorado, Augusta, Valley Center, Hutchinson, and beyond. Same-week appointments are typically available.

Ready to See Your Baby in a Way Your OB Visit Never Showed You?

A private elective ultrasound isn't a replacement for your prenatal care; it's something completely different. It's a slower, more personal, family-centered experience that lets you connect with your baby in detail, share that moment with the people you love, and walk away with keepsakes you'll have for the rest of your life.

If you're somewhere between 26 and 32 weeks and you haven't booked yet, this is the window. And if you're earlier in your pregnancy, it's not too soon to start thinking about which package fits your timeline.

Book your session online or call/text us at (316) 247-6751. We'd love to help you meet your baby.
