Should I Get an Elective Ultrasound? What You Need to Know
You're somewhere in the middle of your pregnancy, scrolling through photos of chubby baby cheeks and tiny yawning faces, and you find yourself wondering is this something I should actually do? Maybe your sister had one done in Derby and won't stop talking about it. Maybe your OB mentioned it offhand. Or maybe you just want more than the grainy black-and-white image from your 20-week anatomy scan.
Elective 3D/4D ultrasounds come up a lot in pregnancy conversations, but there's also a lot of confusion around what they actually are, whether they're safe, and whether the experience is worth it. We hear these questions every week at our Wichita studio, and we want to answer them honestly, because this is your pregnancy, and you deserve real information, not just a sales pitch.
Here are the ten questions we get asked most often.
1. What exactly is an elective ultrasound, and how is it different from the one my OB does?
This is almost always the first question, and it's a fair one.
The ultrasounds at your OB's office are diagnostic. They're medically ordered to check things like fetal growth, placenta position, amniotic fluid levels, and anatomy. The images are captured by clinical staff working through a checklist; they're thorough and important, but the goal is information gathering, not the experience itself.
An elective ultrasound is something you choose on your own, outside of your standard prenatal care. It's not ordered by a doctor, it's not covered by insurance, and it's not intended to replace your medical appointments. The goal is entirely different: it's about bonding, connection, and creating keepsakes. You're in a comfortable room with the people you love, and someone takes the time to find your baby's face, watch them move, and capture images that look nothing like what you've seen in a clinical setting.
At Breathtaking Moments, we offer 3D, 4D, and 5D HD Live imaging, which means you can walk out with stunning still images and video footage of your baby before they're born. That's something your OB's office simply isn't set up to provide.
2. Are elective ultrasounds safe?
This is the question we take most seriously, and we're glad when people ask it.
Ultrasound technology has been used in obstetrics for decades, and diagnostic ultrasound has an excellent safety record. The same ultrasound waves used in medical settings are used in elective studios. There is no radiation involved; ultrasound works through sound waves.
That said, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and other professional organizations do recommend that ultrasound be performed by trained professionals and that sessions not be unnecessarily prolonged. This is exactly why who is operating the equipment matters.
At Breathtaking Moments, every session is performed by Abby, our owner and a registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) with over 10 years of clinical ultrasound experience. She trained and worked in a hospital environment long before opening this studio; she's not someone who bought a machine and figured it out from YouTube. That clinical background means she knows how to conduct a session safely, efficiently, and professionally.
If you're evaluating other studios in the Wichita area, ask about the sonographer's credentials. It's a reasonable question, and a reputable studio will answer it without hesitation.
3. When is the best time to book? I've seen a lot of conflicting information.
The timing question creates more confusion than almost anything else, and here's why: the answer actually depends on what you want to accomplish.
For the classic 3D/4D face and features experience, the sweet spot is between 26 and 32 weeks. At 28–30 weeks in particular, your baby has put on enough fat that their cheeks are full and their features are defined, but the uterus isn't yet so crowded that we're working around knees and elbows just to find a face. The amniotic fluid levels are also typically ideal at this stage, which acts like a natural window for the ultrasound waves.
Before 26 weeks, the images still show a baby, but a thinner, less "filled out" one. Some parents love early imaging and find it meaningful even if the features aren't as distinct. After 34 weeks, we can absolutely still do sessions, but the baby is running out of room and may have their face pressed against the uterine wall or buried in their own limbs. We always try our best, and we offer a free 30-minute rescan if the baby doesn't cooperate, but the 26–32 week window genuinely gives you the highest likelihood of those jaw-dropping images.
For gender determination, that's a different situation entirely. We offer gender sneak peek sessions starting around 15–16 weeks, when anatomy is typically visible.
4. I already have a gender reveal planned with family. Can you help with that?
This is one of the most popular services we offer for families in the Wichita area, and honestly, one of our favorite parts of the job.
Yes, we can determine gender during a second-trimester session and work with you to coordinate whatever reveal format you have in mind. Some families want us to write the gender on a card and seal it so they can hand it to a baker for a cake. Some want a sealed envelope for a confetti cannon purchase. Some families come in together and want to find out in the studio, surrounded by everyone.
We've done it just about every way you can imagine, including families who drove up from Mulvane and Winfield specifically for a gender session because they wanted a sonographer with a strong track record on early determination. At 15–16 weeks, accuracy is good; by 18–20 weeks, we're very confident.
Just let us know when you book what you're planning, and we'll help make it work.
5. Will I actually be able to see my baby clearly? What if the images don't turn out well?
This is a real concern, and we won't pretend it never happens, because sometimes a baby just isn't in the mood to cooperate.
The most common culprits for less-than-ideal images are: baby facing away from the transducer, a hand or foot blocking the face, or low amniotic fluid (which is often related to hydration in the days leading up to the session). A few things you can do to stack the odds in your favor:
Drink a lot of water in the week before your appointment — not just the night before, and not just a glass right before you come in. Consistent hydration over 5–7 days is what actually improves fluid levels.
Eat a light snack 30–60 minutes before — a small amount of natural sugar can increase the baby's activity level and encourage them to move into a better position.
Book in that 26–32 week window for face imaging.
Even when we've done everything right on both ends, sometimes the baby stays stubborn. That's why we offer a free 30-minute rescan if we can't get a clear view of the face. We'd rather give you another chance than send you home disappointed.
6. What's the difference between 3D, 4D, and 5D/HD Live? Which one should I get?
We get this question constantly from Andover and Bel Aire families who have done their research and seen all the terminology but aren't quite sure what it means in practice.
Here's the simplest breakdown:
3D is a single still image rendered in three dimensions. Instead of the flat profile view you see in a standard 2D scan, you see the surface of your baby's face, their actual nose, lips, and cheeks. It looks almost sculptural.
4D adds the dimension of time, meaning it's 3D imaging captured as live video. You're watching your baby move in real time, the yawns, the stretches, the hand near the face. This is usually what makes parents emotional in the studio, because it's not just a snapshot; it's your baby, moving, in a way you've never seen before.
5D / HD Live is the most advanced rendering available. It uses sophisticated processing to produce images that look softer and more photorealistic than standard 3D, think less "clay sculpture" and more "photograph." The lighting effects in particular give it a warm, lifelike quality that's genuinely different from older generations of 3D imaging.
All three are available at Breathtaking Moments. Our Standard Package ($175) includes 2D, 3D, and 4D imaging. Our Deluxe Experience ($200) adds HD Live 5D imaging along with a USB drive, DVD, and a heartbeat stuffed animal.
7. How much does it cost, and is it really worth it?
Let's be straightforward about this. Elective ultrasounds are an out-of-pocket expense; insurance doesn't cover them because they're not medically ordered. Pricing at Breathtaking Moments ranges from $125 for a gender peek session up to $325 for the Full Term Package, which includes three visits across all three trimesters.
The question of whether it's "worth it" is personal, but here's the framing that resonates most with the families we see:
Your OB appointments are clinical. They're checking measurements, anatomy, and fetal position. There's nothing wrong with that; it's critical care. But in those appointments, there's rarely time to simply be present with your baby in an unhurried way. You're in and out.
A session at Breathtaking Moments is different. You have 30–35 minutes. You're with whoever matters to you. The room is comfortable. Abby is patient and takes the time to find a good position, tries different things when the baby is stubborn, and walks you through what you're seeing. For a lot of families, it's the first time pregnancy feels real in a different way, not just evidence of a baby, but a sense of who this person actually is.
Heather, one of our Wichita clients, put it this way after her session: "Had a wonderful session that was well worth the price! Would highly recommend for anyone who wants to get in some sneak peeks of the baby while still in the belly."
8. Can I bring my family? How many people can come?
Yes, and please do. This is one of the things that makes elective ultrasounds genuinely different from an OB appointment.
Our studio is set up for families. We have comfortable seating and a screen that everyone in the room can see. We regularly have couples come in together, grandparents who want to be in the room for the first "meeting," older siblings who are curious about the baby, and friends who are sharing the pregnancy journey.
We don't have a strict headcount limit; just use common sense. If you're thinking of bringing a crowd, you're welcome to call or text us at (316) 247-6751, and we can make sure the room setup works for your group.
Amanda, who came in with her family, shared: "Her setup was comfortable with plenty of room for additional family members, and she got some really great images that will be keepsakes."
9. Do I need a referral from my OB? Do I need to tell them I'm going?
No referral is needed. You can book directly through our online scheduling system without any paperwork from your doctor's office.
That said, many families do mention it to their OB, and we think that's a good practice, not because it's required, but because your prenatal provider should have a general picture of your pregnancy experience. In our 10+ years of experience, OBs in the Wichita area are generally supportive of elective ultrasound studios that are operated by registered sonographers. When your provider knows the session is being conducted by an RDMS in a professional environment, there's rarely any concern.
What we always make clear to clients: an elective session at our studio does not replace any of your medical appointments. If you see something during your session that concerns you, or if you have any questions about fetal well-being, those conversations belong with your OB or midwife. We're here for the bonding experience, not for medical diagnosis.
10. I'm in Derby / Andover / Maize. Is it worth driving to Wichita for this?
We hear this from families all over Southern Kansas, and the short answer is: yes, most of the time it's an easy yes.
We're located at 8343 E. 32nd St., Suite 130 in Wichita, right off I-135, which makes us straightforward to reach from Derby, Andover, Maize, Bel Aire, El Dorado, Haysville, and most of the surrounding communities. A lot of our clients drive 20–45 minutes because there isn't a comparable studio closer to home that offers the same combination of experience, technology, and reputation.
What you're driving for matters: a registered sonographer with a decade of clinical experience, 5D HD Live imaging technology, a comfortable family-friendly environment, a free rescan policy if the baby doesn't cooperate, and a track record of 5-star reviews from local families. We've been featured on Good Day Kansas, and we've built our reputation the old-fashioned way, one family at a time.
Same-week appointments are often available. You can book online or reach us by call or text at (316) 247-6751. If you're not sure which package makes sense for where you are in your pregnancy, just reach out. We're happy to talk it through with you before you book.
